Francisco Soc Rodrigo was born on January 24, 1914. Rodrigo wrote plays in both English and Tagalog that were lauded as distillations of the Filipino spirit. He was an activist during the martial regime imposed by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. In November 1998, the same year he died, Soc Rodrigo’s name was placed to the Wall of Remembrance at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City to honor his commitment to the fight against Ferdinand Marcos. The Gawad Soc Rodrigo award, named after him, is presented jointly by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) (NCCA).
